Title: Hangry

Author: Lily Kate

Genre: Contemporary Romance

About Hangry:

han·gry

adjective

informal

  1. bad-tempered or irritable as a result of hunger.

Ladies & Gents,

I sold my soul for a hamburger.

And I have no regrets. When a girl is trapped indefinitely in an elevator with a smoking hot burger and an empty stomach, even the strongest of women will crumble.

The story goes like this: Bradley Hamilton, the most frustrating human alive, offered me half of his hamburger in exchange for a date. I took him up on the offer—while under duress—and now I’m stuck with the consequences. Specifically, the scorching kiss at the end of our date that has me drooling for more.

However, there’s one whopper of a problem. This man has been a thorn in my side for the last twenty years—ever since he moved next door and became my older brother’s best friend. We’ve gone head to head for years, and now, he’s trying to buy out my restaurant in order to plop one of his big fat gyms there instead.

I refuse to let him ruin my business. Unfortunately, Bradley Hamilton is like an order of french fries: you just can’t have one. It appears our lips are addicted to kissing. He’s alarmingly handsome. Deliciously confident. And worst of all? Underneath that salty exterior he’s starting to show signs of sweet.

Brad Hamilton is my guilty pleasure, my cheat meal, my greatest craving.

Which is why he’ll be one habit that’s hard to kick.

“Well, that worked out well.” I give Bradley a smile and wait for the doors to slide open. “That was almost awkward.”

I wait, and I wait a bit longer. I’m trying to be patient, but I’d really intended for that last comment to be a flippant dismissal before I stormed my sequined rear end down the hallway and far away from Bradley Hamilton.

I reach over, press the door-open button.

Tap my toes.

Nothing.

“What did you do?” I whirl to face Bradley. “Why aren’t these doors opening?”

He’s got this odd sort of grimace on his face that’s torn between mild amusement and frustration. “What did I do? I’m not the one lighting up the button panel like a Christmas tree.”

“Why aren’t the doors opening?”

He raises a hand, points to the numbers. “We’re stuck between six and seven, sweetheart.”

I’m stunned. Mostly by his use of the word sweetheart. He’s only called me that once before, and it was just before he almost kissed me. A long time ago.

“Stuck? No, we can’t be stuck.”

“Fine,” he agrees. “We’re not stuck, we’re stalled.”

I glare at the numbers on the elevator. “But I have to be at work like… twenty minutes ago.”

“Tell them you’ll be late.”

“I’m the boss—I can’t be late.”

“The elevator is stuck. There’s not much you can do about it.”

I pull out my phone, glance down reluctantly at the messages to see if there’s a reply from Rick. No reply—and that’s strange. He should be at the diner by now and calling me frantically to see why I haven’t arrived.

That’s when I notice the angry red mark next to the text. A warning exclamation point that tells me the message never sent in the first place, probably thanks to these stupid cement walls blocking out all my service. I should’ve known; I drop calls every time I use the back entrance to our building.

I let out a train of expletives that doesn’t stop until I’ve used every last one in the book.

“It’s fine,” Bradley says, his voice even and cool. “We’ll just call for some help. Five minutes, max.”

“Great. Does your phone have service? Mine doesn’t.”

“Press the call button. That’s what it’s there for.”

“How’d you find out about this elevator, anyway?” I ask as my fingers depress the red button.

“Fred. You?”

“Freaking Fred,” I say. “He told me it was a secret.”

“Fred keeps secrets like a sieve. Especially when a pretty girl is asking for help.”

“A pretty…oh.” I blush at his implication. Then I press the button a hundred more times in rapid succession because I can’t meet his eyes.

“Does it help to press it a million times?” Bradley asks. “Because it looks like it’s not working.”

“It helps with my car and my computer,” I say through gritted teeth. “Do you have any better ideas?”

And now it is time for my review:

Just like Hangry this review is going to be short and sweet.   I really enjoyed Hangry it is a very cute super quick read.   It is a story about a woman that gets stuck in an elevator with her brother’s ex best friend.   The same ex best friend she lives across the hall from and has had a crush on all her life.   I admit I like the in love with the brother’s best friend trope.  Sometimes it can get on my nerves if the brother is way too overprotective.  I can kind of see why a brother might be protective when the sister is still in high school. In Hangry, Lexi is a grown woman running her own diner.   I like that her brother warns his friend not to hurt her but doesn’t interfere in the romance.   So this starts off with, Brad and Lexi getting stuck in an elevator together deciding to go on a date for a hamburger and the fun begins from there.
I know I have already mentioned this but I really did like that this story.  There isn’t a lot of angst.  I liked that because these two characters know what they want and go after it.  Sometimes it is nice to go into a story and it is just about a couple falling in love.   Not to mention the chemistry between Lexi and Brad was super-hot.  I definitely could feel the flames coming out of my Kindle.
I definitely recommend Hangry if you are looking for a quick short read.  It is definitely one of those books I call a palate cleanser; you know a nice read to read in between longer books.  Why?  Because, Hangry is I call light fun brain candy.  I admit I am curious about what is in store for Lexi’s best friends.   Those women were hoot and I found myself a smiling a lot when they were on the page.   I hope there more books in this series because I am definitely want more from this world.   Because, this world is full of hot guys, sexy banter, and happily ever afters and I can’t enough.

At Twin Oaks Country Club, there are the fortunate ones, and then there are the rest of us: the waiters, the caddies, the valets, and in my case, the cabana girls. Most days, I’m poolside in a pleated skirt, dishing out margaritas to tycoons and titans. It’s not exactly my dream job, but it does come with one perk…

James Ashwood.

He’s my silver lining in a custom black suit.

Besides being a legacy member at the club, he’s a tech mogul and Austin’s most eligible bachelor. Oh, and those dimples? Yeah, they make my stomach dip too.

On good days, I catch his sleek Porsche winding down the tree-lined drive. On better days, I steal a glimpse of his handsome profile as we pass in the hall. And on the absolute best day, I find him alone at the bar, looking for company.

“Come have a seat.”

Those four little words set me down a path I never could have imagined. Private planes, penthouse suites, and temptations around every corner make it impossible to keep my distance. His world feels decadent and wild—but overindulgence comes with a cost. Every kiss comes with strings. Every erotic encounter is a promise I’m not ready to keep.

When I pump the brakes, he hits the gas. James doesn’t want to go slow—he wants a commitment.

And the thing about the fortunate ones?

They’re used to getting what they want.

I thought this book was going to be a romantic comedy.  Some sweet sexy fluffy romance that I would fly right through, you know brain candy.  For some people that is probably exactly what this story was for them.  For me, though this was a classic case of: it’s not you it’s me.  Because, in the end there was way too much angst for a story that is advertised as a romantic comedy.  Once I got over my initial disappointment, I actually liked The Fortunate Ones.  This story ended up being a decent read.  Not bad, not great, but not a waste of time either.

 ,
The story starts off with Brooke a 25 year old woman down on her luck.  She comes from a well off family but is determined to make it on her own after she gets fired from her au pair job.  She takes a job at a country club in Austin Texas.  She bikes to work and lives in a co-op household.  She likes to make it perfectly clear her dad may have money but she doesn’t. Here is another thing that I kind of liked but was annoyed at by the false advertising of the synopsis.  I was under the impression that Brooke was not a “Fortunate One” but except she kind of is because she never had to eat bologna sandwiches growing up or watch as her parents struggled to pay bills.  Her step mom is a stay at home wife and works on charity fundraising committees.  Her mom travels in the Peace Corps.   I admire that Brooke herself struggles.  I admire that she doesn’t want to take handouts.  It annoys me that she acts like she doesn’t come from this world.  That is fine if she wants to be her own woman.  If she wants to leave the behind the lifestyles of the rich and more rich.  But, I found her judgmental ways to be kind of annoying.

Then one day Brooke meets James, the stylish and ever so handsome millionaire every woman under 40 wants to marry.  Brooke knows she should stay away because James wants a wife and kids.  Brooke is determined to leave the world of the rich and more rich behind.  She wants to teach children as a nanny or au pair.  She wants to travel the world.  Honestly, I don’t think she know what she wants.  So, the push and pull of the days of our lives, aka the James and Brooke love affair begins.

Again, I felt like this book more drama than romantic comedy.   It was story about a woman that needs to find herself.  She is at that time in her life that many 25 year olds find themselves in.  That time when it is time to decide to grow up.  Sometimes it is an easy transition that one falls into.  Get a job, meet the person you want to marry, and then raise a family.  Sometimes for people like Brooke it is a harder transition because there are so many things they wants to do.  Brooke wants to eat, teach, and travel her way across the world.  It was a romance and there were some funny parts in this story.  But, it was also very dramatic and full of so much angst.   The back and forth thing really started drive me crazy and actually seemed kind of unrealistic.

I want to reiterate that I didn’t dislike this story I was just disappointed and slightly annoyed at times.  I can understand needing to find yourself.  I can understand wanting to make it on your own.  I just didn’t really like the Brooke and James.  I liked a lot of the side characters like Brooke’s sister Ellie and the couple Brooke goes go to work for.  I think liking the overall story and the supporting characters is what kept me reading this book.  I am sorry to admit I didn’t connect to Brooke or James.  Sometimes, it happens when I read a story, I just can’t feel the chemistry or the magic in the couple’s romance.  So in the end, The Fortunate Ones had good side characters, decent plot, but sadly a romance that I couldn’t get behind.  That makes for me,  The Fortunate One just an okay average read.

“I missed you today,” he says, his heated gaze lingering on my body.

I step back, and he follows.

He looks like he’s cornering his prey.

“Apparently not enough to make it to dinner,” I point out icily.

“I called the restaurant and told them I’d be late. Didn’t they tell you?”

I cross my arms and glance away.

“Brooke.” He steps closer and gently lifts my chin, forcing me to look back at him. “Fight with me tomorrow.”

I narrow my eyes, angry with him for shelving this discussion so casually. To him, it doesn’t matter that I sat in that restaurant alone, looking like a fool for nearly two hours. He’s brushing off my anger, stepping closer and forcing his way past my defenses.

“I think I’d like to talk about it now.”

I catch the beginning of a smirk just before he leans in to kiss my cheek.

“Are you sure there isn’t anything you’d rather be doing right now?”

He uncrosses my arms and brings them up over his shoulders then steps closer, towering over me. My arms tighten around his neck, but still, I turn away, keeping my mouth from him. His breath hits my neck and he pulls me taut against his hard body, growing more impatient with every moment I try to resist.

“Brooke,” he whispers huskily.

My eyes flutter closed as he bends and presses a kiss to my cheek, my chin, then lower, tipping my head back so he can reach the smooth recess at the nape of my neck. I shiver and he groans, obviously aware of what his touch is doing to me.

[Blitz] MISS FIX IT by Emma Hart

Spotlights & Tours 0 Comments 31st October, 2017

One handywoman.

One single dad.

One set of twins.

And the wall isn’t the only thing being drilled…

I learned the hard way that being a handywoman isn’t easy. The questions, the stares—the assumption I’m the proud owner of a cock and balls. Not that it matters. I’ve proven over and over that I’m ready for anything the judgmental asses throw at me.

Except the hot, single dad of twins who just moved to town.

Brantley Cooper gets the shock of his life when I show up on his doorstep to fix up his kids’ new rooms. His son is confused why ‘the pretty lady has a drill,’ and his daughter has a new obsession—me.

On paper, my job is easy. Go in, do their bedrooms, and leave.

In theory, I’m spending eight hours a day with a guarded, sexy as hell guy, and I’m staying for dinner more often than I’m eating it alone, on my couch, with Friends re-runs.

I shouldn’t be staying for dinner. I shouldn’t be helping him out with the twins. I shouldn’t be falling in love with tiny toes and dimpled cheeks.

And I most definitely should not be kissing my client.

Oops…

“I swear, messing with me is your new favorite hobby.”
“It is,” he admitted, eyes sparkling. “You’re so easy to mess with, I don’t even have to try.”
I rolled my eyes. “And to think—I let myself be guilt-tripped into this.”
“More fool you. I warned you about her, and you obviously didn’t listen.”
“That’s so not fair. I did listen, I just don’t have freaky skills to avoid the guilt like you do.”
“I don’t avoid the guilt. I pretend.”
“Would you have pretended if you were me, knowing you’d leave a poor guy to be lonely?”
He raised his eyebrows. “I wouldn’t have been lonely. I’d have watched TV with my pants off.”
“You don’t get to use my plans as an excuse,” I scoffed. “And unless your daughter is a master manipulator, you would have been lonely.”
“She’s four. All four-year-olds are master manipulators. If kids came with manuals, that would be the title of the chapter that talks about age four,” he said.
“There are technically manuals. They’re these wonderful, futuristic things called books.”
“None of which are geared toward a single dad,” he pointed out. “The last time I Googled something, I diagnosed Eli with a rare, deadly disease, learned that there are way too many styles of braid for any human being to master, and also found out how to get the kids out of the door by eight and have time to do my make-up.”
I paused. “I can see how that last one would be of use to you. Your mascara looks wonderful today.”

Hard Wood is the kind of heart-racing, hope soaring, face-flushing love story that I love to read! It was sexy, romantic, funny and an absolute pleasure to read.” ~Red Cheeks Reads

Excerpt

I haven’t seen Mia in almost a month, since the last time she was in town staying with Max. I didn’t realize she’d be back a full week before her other brother Chase’s wedding, and am I ever glad to see her again.

She makes all parts of me quite happy indeed.

By happy, I mean hard as a rock.

Okay, fine. It’s not like I’m operating at full power this second. I’m thirty-three, not fifteen. I have plenty of self-control in the “when and where to pitch a tent” arena. All I’m saying is this woman gets me going, and I feel that zip down my body when I see her.

She’s on the phone, her eyebrows pinched, her expression harried. She drags her hand through her caramel-blond hair. As I walk closer, I hear her say, “I understand. Yes, I understand. Things happen.”

And that’s the sound of someone being disappointed.

Which is a terrible thing for this sexy-as-a-fiery-sunset woman to experience.

When she stops and ends her call, she spots me. She tilts her head, her eyes piercing, her brow furrowed, and her dimples killing me with cuteness. Her eyes roam from me to Zeus, and then she points at my boy. “I don’t know if anyone has told you this . . .”

I raise my eyebrows. “Tell me. What could it possibly be?”

Her eyes drift to the ground then back up. In a deadpan tone, she says, “But there’s a cat in your hat? Well, on your back, actually.”

“There is?” I crane my neck to peer over my shoulder. “You’re right. How did he get there?”

She parks her hands on her hips. “You’re in big trouble.”

“I’ve been bad, have I?”

She pushes my shoulder then wags her finger at me. “How did you keep this from me?”

I quirk an eyebrow. “The fact that there’s an awesome new Italian place down the street? It opened last month, and I planned to tell you.”

She huffs, rolling her eyes. “I’ve known you for months and you didn’t tell me you had a cat. Friends don’t hide pets from friends.”

She’s not in town that often. She hasn’t ever been to my apartment. And I don’t take Zeus upstairs to Max’s. But I’m not going to state the obvious. I’m going to have a little fun with her. Flirt with her. Because . . . that’s what we do.

“There’s a reason for that.”

Her eyes go wide, and she taps her toe, waiting. I drag a hand through my hair. Evie says my light brown hair is floppy, and she tells me this is a good thing. The ladies love floppy hair, she says. She’s been right so far. My hair’s been a big hit with the ladies, and other parts have, too.

“It’s a good reason,” I add.

“I’m waiting, Patrick. This really isn’t the type of intel you should hold back.”

I heave a sigh as if I’m going to make a huge admission, then I park a hand on her shoulder. Because, well, I’m a sneaky bastard and I’ll look for any opening to touch her. “Look, I’m going to be blunt. If I told you I had a hiking cat who rides shotgun in a backpack and can purr like he’s a jazz superstar, you’d have had no choice but to fall in love with me.”

“HARD WOOD was such an adorable love story! A hot guy and his famous cat looking for their happily ever after … Perfect #RomCom!”

SUMMARY

“Heartbreaking…inspiring, uplifting and raw…” ― RT Book Reviews, A 5-star Gold Pick

 A broken woman . . .

Crystal learned long ago that love brings only pain. Feeling nothing at all is far better than being hurt again. She guards her wounded heart behind a hard exterior and carries within her a deep mistrust of men, who, in her experience, have only ever used and taken.

A man in need of help . . .

Then Gabriel Dalton walks into her life. Despite the terrible darkness of his past, there’s an undeniable goodness in him. And even though she knows the cost, Crystal finds herself drawn to Gabriel. His quiet strength is wearing down her defenses and his gentle patience is causing her to question everything she thought she knew.

Only love can mend a shattered heart . . .

Crystal and Gabriel never imagined that the world, which had stolen everything from them, would bring them a deep love like this. Except fate will only take them so far, and now the choice is theirs: Harden their hearts once again or find the courage to shed their painful pasts.

And now for my review:

Most of All You is a story about love.  Well,  that is a given by the title and the fact that it is romance novel.   But, it is a story about more than just boy meets girl and they all live happily ever after.   This is about all the different types of love. Most of All You is a story about the most important love we can have in our lives and that is the love of ourselves.

I really enjoyed this book because it is exploration of two broken people picking up the pieces and putting themselves back together again.  I loved how realistic this story is.  A person that has issues doesn’t meet a lover and all their problems are magically solved.  As Ellie says,”You can’t fix me.”  No a person can’t fix someone who is not ready to heal.  This is beautiful story about strength.  Strength is not just about physical prowess.  Sometimes it takes a great deal of mental strength to pick up the pieces of your broken soul and put them back together.  Without giving away any spoilers, I will say there is a scene in this book that made me cry and cheer at the same time.  It takes so much courage to face the people who have hurt you and tell them I am not trash and I am worth being treated like a human being.

I really enjoyed this story because it does a really great job of showing how we treat ourselves can reflect how others treat us.   I know, not like Ellie or Gabriel had to discover, but again I know that you have to find self worth because only then will you know the kind of love you deserve.   This is one of those stories that will stick with me because I came to care for Ellie and Gabriel.   I am so glad I got to go on their journey to happiness with them.

[Blitz] DIGNITY by Jay Crownover

Uncategorized 0 Comments 17th October, 2017

New York Times and USA Today Bestselling Author Jay Crownover returns with the second title in her romantic suspense series, The Breaking Point, DIGNITY. Check out the excerpt below and grab your copy today!

About DIGNITY:

Looks can be deceiving.

I knew that most people took one look at the ink and the impossibly big and strong body it covered and decided I was a brawler…a bruiser…a beast. However, I was hardwired to be a thinker, not a fighter.

I should have chosen to use my brain and talents to be one of the good guys, a hero, a man with dignity and worth.

I turned my back on dignity and sold my soul to the highest bidder, deciding to dance with the devil, instead.

I couldn’t figure out how to help myself, so there was zero chance I knew how to save someone else.

That someone else was Noe Lee. She was the unkempt, unruly thief who was just as smart as I was and twice as street savvy. She was annoyingly adorable beneath the dirt and grime, and she was in trouble. In way over her head, I told myself it wasn’t my job to keep her from drowning. In the Point, it was sink or swim, and I wasn’t the designated lifeguard on duty.

I shut the door in her face, but now she’s gone…vanished…disappeared without a trace. It took less than a second for me to realize that I wanted her back.

When a woman comes along that melts all the frozen, hard things you’re made of; you’ll do anything you have to, to bring her home.

What you see is not always what you get…and with a man like me, what you get is more than anyone ever bargained for.

EXCERPT

Protective and possessive instincts coiled around my gut and rage felt like it was going to choke me. I was so used to being cold and numb, I didn’t know what to do with the fire that was licking at my insides.

“I saw him take her out of the trunk when they got to the docks. He moved like a cop. Not the kind who is there to actually protect and serve, but the kind who pulls you over for no reason and slaps cuffs on you to prove a point. I was locked up for a lot of years, boy genius. I know what a dirty cop looks like. He had a busted-up nose and stitches on the side of his face. Should be pretty easy for Titus to identify him.”

Titus King was Bax’s half-brother and the only law enforcement officer in the entire city any of us slightly trusted. He was one of the few men the Point hadn’t tainted. He was a good guy, trying to do right by the people in our city, and he wouldn’t hesitate to throw Goddard’s dirty cop under the bus. But I didn’t want anyone going after the Mayor. His sadistic ass was all mine.

“Do you think they made it out of the container after you hit it with the truck?” That had been my idea. Nassir was only sending in Booker and Benny to get Noe out, but I didn’t think it was enough fire power. Since he refused to let me go, even siccing Chuck on me as a babysitter until the job was done, I made Benny go over the plan with me no less than a hundred times until I came up with a better one. Knocking the container sideways with one of the big semi-trucks that littered the area would give Benny the time he needed to get Noe out and distract the outside security detail enough that Booker could do his thing. It was a risk because the people inside the container—including Noe and Benny—might have ended up injured when the thing flipped, but the odds of them making it out were much higher than if Benny tried to take on everyone on his own.

“If Benny made it out, we won’t hear from him again. That was the deal he made with Nassir. He would get your girl and then disappear, so he can go and live happily ever after with his. As for the rest of them,” he shrugged, “I guess we’ll find out soon enough. Your girl said someone had a gun, so if they were shooting at Benny, he would do whatever he could to make sure they stopped. He’s not about to catch a bullet for any of us. I know you want that asshole alive for your own reasons, but honestly, it’s better if Benny popped him.”

It was better, but it wasn’t what I wanted. A bullet between the eyes was way too easy for a guy like Goddard. People would bemoan how bad the Point had become, how Goddard had been a staunch supporter of crime prevention measures. He would die a martyr and a legend. I couldn’t stand the thought of that. I wanted who Goddard was, who he really was, out in the open. I wanted his mansion doors flung wide open and every skeleton inside the walls exposed and thrown out on the perfectly manicured lawn for the entire world to see. I hated people who hid behind the law. I hated when men in any position of power got off on using their elevated status to jerk the helpless and hopeless around. Death wasn’t the answer. Devastation was.

I closed my eyes and squeezed the cold, still hand that was clasped in mine. Failure weighed heavy on my shoulders and fury lit up my blood like popping and sizzling firecrackers.

“When do we ever end up with anything that’s better for us?” That wasn’t how the Point worked. That wasn’t how we worked.

Booker grunted and I felt him move behind me. “It happens. It doesn’t seem like better should be able to find a foothold in this place, but despite all odds, it does.”

About THE REAL DEAL:

Sophie Kinsella meets Jennifer Crusie in your next favorite romantic comedy, THE REAL DEAL!

April Hamilton wants you to know she hasn’t been on Craigslist since that time she sold her futon after college. She doesn’t even spend that much time online. And even if she did, she would not be looking up personal ads. But going home alone for her family’s summer reunion is an invitation for every single relative to butt into her personal life. She simply can’t handle another blind date with the butcher, the baker or the candlestick maker from her hometown. So when she finds the Craigslist ad for a boyfriend-for-hire, she’s ready to pay to play.

Heading Home and Need a Buffer? I’m the REAL DEAL.

Theo Banks has been running from the past for years. He’s this close to finally settling all his debts, and one more job as a boyfriend-for-hire will do the trick. He’s no gigolo. Please. He’s something of an actor, and he knows how to slip into any role, including pretending to be April’s new beau — the bad boy with the heart of gold.

Even if it means sleeping in close quarters in that tiny little bed in her parents’ inn. Even if it means spinning tales of a romance that starts to feel all too true. What neither one of them counts on is that amid the egg toss, the arm wrestling, and a fierce game of Lawn Twister that has them tangled up together, they might be feeling the real deal.

She only wanted to show her family once and for all that she had no need to settle down.

He didn’t expect to have the time of his life at her parent’s home.

They didn’t plan on loving every single second of the game.

But can a masterful game of pretend result in true love?
