He knows his place on the pitch, but in life, it's a whole other game.
All his life, Liam Donnelly looked and wondered. Could he? Would he? And then, finally, he did. But when he sampled a taste of that forbidden fruit, his whole world came crashing down, his position with Dublin Rugby right along with it. When the chance to ply his trade in Edinburgh comes along, Liam jumps at the offer, knowing it could be his best opportunity to start fresh and get back to the man he once was. But one look at Chef Lachlan MacLeod-his knowing, whisky-colored eyes, the abrasive scruff dotting his jaw, and the colorful ink lining his forearms-and Liam's wondering all over again. Can he? Will he? His heart says no, but his body says yes. Too bad love is never that simple.

He's conquered his own demons; can he help another man do the same?
Out and proud Chef Lachlan MacLeod has no problem with who he is, except he has a history of hooking up with bi-curious straight men. He's vowed never to go down that path again, but when Liam Donnelly shows up in his restaurant, his eyes filled with heat and secret longing, Lachlan can't help himself. He knows the closeted rugby player is a terrible idea, but the man calls to him in a way no one ever has before. What started as a safe way for Liam to explore his sexuality quickly morphs into something much deeper, and now Lachlan wants more. But can his heart reconcile what his head already knows-that loving the gorgeous, broken athlete might actually mean letting him go?

I think as I get older I just don’t have time to power through books I personally don’t like. I usually don’t write a review for a book I decided not to finish. But, I read the blurb of Break Down thought that I would love it and accepted a review copy. I feel like I owe it to Break Down to review the half of the book I did read.

Break Down is a male/male romance about a rugby player, named Liam, and the hot chef, named Lachlan, who steals his heart. I have not read a lot of male/male romance but the books I have read I have really enjoyed. I really wanted to like Break Down because you know it had the guys loving the guys. I just could not love this book. I tried, I tried, and I tried again to get into the story. But, I felt like I was reading Break Down forever and finally I had to put this book down and walk away.

You might be asking, why did I stop reading Break Down? I just could not read any more about the wishy washy sometimes an asshole rugby player, Liam. He might turn into the guy with a heart of gold who is declaring his undying love by the end of the story but I just could not deal with him anymore. So, Liam is not gay. But, Liam know he is bisexual though he has never been with a man. He thinks about men. He fantasies about men. Then, when given the chance to be with a man he freaks out and runs away.   Then, calls the guy when he needs something. I did like that Lachlan calls him out on his BS. That was probably my favorite part.

I admit I have not read very many male/male romances so I am not expert on the different tropes but I feel like they are mostly the same in any romance. I feel like this is trope pretty common the person who is not sure of the relationship and the other person who wants them so much they look past all the red flags. I get Liam is a rugby player so coming out as bisexual man in love with a man might not be hard for him to get past. I get that that sometimes with all the pressures that still exist the world, even today, it is hard to just be yourself. I can’t put my finger on part of the first half of the story I was like. I just felt like the hiding was getting old. I think I wanted to read a book about a man in sports that was like, yes I like both men and women and was sure of his life choices. Plus, part I did read didn’t even have that much rugby.

So, in the end, I think this was just a classic case of its not you it’s me. I have strict policy with romance stories, I have to feel the connection. I just was not feeling Liam and Lachlan and their romance. So, for that main reason I had to DNF Break Down. I believe life is just too short to read a story you just aren’t feeling.

FIREBALL by Nazarea Andrews

A Standalone Contemporary Romance

(River Street Bar series, #1)

Coming March 8

Blurb:

He’s infuriating…

Dempsey Jones has been a nuisance my entire life, the straight-laced Boy Scout grown up to be a firefighter, of all things. He was the one helping kittens out of trees and old ladies cross the road while I was lighting cherry bombs with my best friend in abandoned buildings, and now that we’re all grown up—even if my Dad doesn’t agree—he’s still just as annoying.

She’s impossible…

Taite Ridley has been a constant my whole life, the curly haired mischievous daughter of the police chief, charming and devious and alluring. She was wild in ways I never dared to be and too big for our little town. But she’s here, a small town cop, and I can’t avoid her, even if I wanted to.

And I don’t want to.

It’s like mixing fire and gasoline and when these two collide, someone is gonna get burned…

Excerpt:

I grew up in River City.

It’s a good place for a kid to grow up—small town enough that I could wander without causing much worry, as long as no one counted my father.

He counted himself, but I stopped a while ago.

But it’s small enough that there’s not enough crime that I couldn’t wander, and big enough that it didn’t bore even me to tears. It was this intoxicatingly perfect mix of small town and big city, where everyone knew everyone and we didn’t have to drive an hour to go to a mall or museum.

And I never wanted to leave it. River City was home. I wandered away for college, and promptly came back, and I loved it—it’s where every good memory I had was, a place I cared about with a ferocity that only a native could. It knew my secrets and my history and it kept both safe.

But right this second, as I stood on Mrs. Rudolph’s front yard in the sideways rain—she was perched on her covered porch with a cup of coffee clasped in her wrinkled hands—I was questioning literally every decision I’d ever made in my life.

“Ma’am, we checked your crawlspace last week.”

“That Harper checked it,” Mrs Rudolph says, dismissive as fuck and I hear a muffled snort behind me. My smile feels brittle as she smiles brightly at me. “But I know you’ll do a good job. You don’t mind, do you, Taite?”

And that’s why.

I love River City with all my heart, but I swear to god, becoming a cop in a city that watched me grow up was probably the worst idea I’d ever had.

And I’d had a long and illustrious career of bad ideas, as Daddy was very helpful to point out.

A choked noise came from behind me and I fixed my plastic smile a little bit wider before saying, “Gimme just one second, Mrs Rudolph, Officer Delgado and I need to talk.”

She nods agreeably and takes a sip of her damnable coffee and I turn to pin my partner with a glare.

Miguel doesn’t even have the good grace to try to hide his smile.

“Don’t look at me like that,” he says, smile wide and cheerful.

“It’s your turn to go crawling under houses.”

“How do you figure that?” he asks, attempting to school his expression.

“I went up the tree for the Foster girls’ kitten last week!”

“Didn’t Dempsey—”

I snarl and he very wisely shuts his mouth. His eyes are still a little too bright, though, and I kinda want to punch him. I do not stomp my foot. “You promised not to bring him up,” I snap.

“I know,” he gives me apologetic eyes. “I slipped, sorry.”

I glance back at the house, at Mrs Rudolph waiting anxiously.

“I have to go, don’t I?” I say, resigned.

Miguel nudges me with one shoulder. “If you don’t, we’ll be here next week. She’s not gonna believe any of us until you tell her there’s nothing down there.”

“But—”

This. This is the problem. I grew up here, the only daughter of the police chief, a fucking widower and somehow became the town mascot. Even when I want to be taken serious, it’s like all anyone sees is the knobby kneed, ratty haired fourteen year old running the streets with Miguel and getting into trouble.

I huff a curse and shrug out of my waterproofed jacket. The rain immediately starts biting into my uniform and I resign myself to spending the rest of my shift wet and muddy.

Maybe Miguel would let us swing by my apartment to change before we headed back to the station.

“I hate this,” I mutter and he nods.

But he doesn’t quite hide his grin as I drop to my knees and crawl under Mrs Rudolph’s damn house.

“I went to school for this. The fucking Academy. So I could crawl around in the mud looking for—fuck. Miguel, what the fuck am I even looking for?” I shout, my voice muffled.

Spotlights & Tours 0 Comments 21st February, 2018

We are thrilled to bring you the cover from New York Times Bestselling authors Vi Keeland and Penelope Ward, REBEL HEIR the first book in a new, sexy duet releasing on April 9th!

COVER CREDITS:

Cover designer: Sommer Stein, Perfect Pear Creative

How to kick off a great summer in the Hamptons:

Snag a gorgeous rental on the beach. Check.

Get a job at a trendy summer haunt. Check.

How to screw up a great summer in the Hamptons:

Fall for the one guy with a dark leather jacket, scruff on his face, and intense eyes that doesn’t fit in with the rest of the tony looking crowd. A guy you can’t have when you’ll be leaving at the end of the season.

Check. Check. Check.

I should add—especially when the guy is your sexy, tattooed God of a boss.

Especially when he not only owns your place of employment but inherited half of the town.

Especially when he’s mean to you.

Or so I thought.

Until one night when he demanded I get in his car so he could drive me home because he didn’t want me walking in the dark.

That was sort of how it all started with Rush.

And then little by little, some of the walls of this hardass man started to come down.

I never expected that the two of us, seemingly opposites from the outside, would grow so close.

I wasn’t supposed to fall for the rebel heir, especially when he made it clear he didn’t want to cross the line with me.

As the temperature turned cooler, the nights became hotter. My summer became a lot more interesting—and complicated.

All good things must come to an end, right?

Except our ending was one I didn’t see coming.

Rebel Heir is the first book in the Rush Series Duet. Book Two, Rebel Heart, will release six weeks later on May, 22, 2018.

Spotlights & Tours 0 Comments 13th February, 2018

From New York Times and USA Today bestselling author Kristen Ashley comes a new story in her Chaos series…

About ROUGH RIDE:

Rosalie Holloway put it all on the line for the Chaos Motorcycle Club.

Informing to Chaos on their rival club—her man’s club, Bounty—Rosalie knows the stakes. And she pays them when her man, who she was hoping to scare straight, finds out she’s betrayed him and he delivers her to his brothers to mete out their form of justice.

But really, Rosie has long been denying that, as she drifted away from her Bounty, she’s been falling in love with Everett “Snapper” Kavanagh, a Chaos brother. Snap is the biker-boy-next door with the snowy blue eyes, quiet confidence and sweet disposition who was supposed to keep her safe…and fell down on that job.

For Snapper, it’s always been Rosalie, from the first time he saw her at the Chaos Compound. He’s just been waiting for a clear shot. But he didn’t want to get it after his Rosie was left bleeding, beat down and broken by Bounty on a cement warehouse floor.

With Rosalie a casualty of an ongoing war, Snapper has to guide her to trust him, take a shot with him, build a them…

And fold his woman firmly in the family that is Chaos.

**Every 1001 Dark Nights novella is a standalone story. For new readers, it’s an introduction to an author’s world. And for fans, it’s a bonus book in the author’s series. We hope you’ll enjoy each one as much as we do.**

EXCERPT:

My dad had been a biker. He was a nomad when it came to that kind of thing (or, really, any kind of thing). He accepted being tied down by his woman and his daughter only, not anything else. Not a job. Not a mortgage. Not a membership to a club. He hung with a lot of them, including Chaos (in fact, Hammer, sadly now deceased, but one of the founding members of Chaos, had been my father’s best friend).

But he’d never hung with Bounty.

“Don’t like the feel of them,” I’d heard him mutter years ago. “If you’re an outlaw, own the outlaw. If you’re not, own that. You can’t wanna be a Gypsy Joker. You either are or you aren’t. They wanna be. But they aren’t. That shit just ain’t right and it could get dangerous.”

He’d been right.

It got dangerous.

I should have known.

I should have followed my dad.

Mom and me had done it all our lives, job to job, house to house, city to city.

Why I stopped…

Damn.

I knew why I’d stopped.

I’d wanted Shy; Shy, who reminded me of Dad.

And when I couldn’t have him, I’d gone looking.

I’d wanted what my mom had.

I’d wanted that sweetness. That love.

That devotion.

I’d wanted the stability that just seeped down deep into your bones from all that no matter the job changing, the scenery changing, the amount of times you boxed up a house.

Stability had nothing to do with income and locale.

Kristen Ashley was born in Gary, Indiana, USA and nearly killed her mother and herself making it into the world, seeing as she had the umbilical cord wrapped around her neck (already attempting to accessorize and she hadn’t taken her first breath!). Her mother said they took Kristen away, put her Mom back in her room, her mother looked out the window, and Gary was on fire (Dr. King had been assassinated four days before). Kristen’s Mom remembered thinking it was the end of the world. Quite the dramatic beginning.

Nothing’s changed.

Kristen grew up in Brownsburg, Indiana and has lived in Denver, Colorado and the West Country of England. Thus, she’s blessed to have friends and family around the globe. Her family was (is) loopy (to say the least) but loopy is good when you want to write. They all lived together on a very small farm in a small farm town in the heartland. She grew up with Glenn Miller, The Everly Brothers, REO Speedwagon and Whitesnake (and the wardrobes that matched).

Needless to say, growing up in a house full of music, clothes and love was a good way to grow up.

And as she keeps growing, it keeps getting better.

Something is out there, something terrifying that must not be seen. One glimpse of it, and a person is driven to deadly violence. No one knows what it is or where it came from.

Five years after it began, a handful of scattered survivors remains, including Malorie and her two young children. Living in an abandoned house near the river, she has dreamed of fleeing to a place where they might be safe. Now that the boy and girl are four, it's time to go, but the journey ahead will be terrifying: twenty miles downriver in a rowboat--blindfolded--with nothing to rely on but her wits and the children’s trained ears. One wrong choice and they will die. Something is following them all the while, but is it man, animal, or monster?

Interweaving past and present, Bird Box is a snapshot of a world unraveled that will have you racing to the final page

I know this unrelated to this review but I just wanted to share a challenge that I have been trying out. This year I am going to read more outside of my go to genre, romance. I am going to try to read at least one or more horror, mystery or thriller book a month. This month for my thriller/horror read I decided to pick up Bird Box. Please don’t get me wrong in this review, I liked the story. I definitely, appreciate what the author was trying to do writing a world that is based on the fear of the unknown. It was that fear of the unknown that drew me to Bird Box. I wanted to read something that just might scare the pants off me.

I admit I mainly picked up Bird box because it is becoming a movie starring Sandra Bullock and John Malkovich.   I knew I needed to read this book before the movie came out. I mean it must be good to have such big named actors headlining the movie. Right? So, I built this book with way too many expectations in my head. I was getting goosebumps just thinking about reading Bird Box. Sadly, it just didn’t hit the mark. Instead of a truly terrifying tale I got a story about complacency. A story about facing fears. It was thrilling and even tense in some parts but it was definitely not what I thought it was going to be.

Bird Box takes place in world where these creatures now roam the Earth for some unknown reason. If a person sees these creatures then they will be driven to madness with a desire to kill themselves and those around them. The world has fallen into an apocalypse wasteland. The story opens four years after the world has fallen. A woman named Malorie along with her two children must board a row boat and row to safety, blindfolded. Malorie has no idea what she is running from because to survive she has never entered this new world with her eyes open. But, her supplies are running low and it is getting harder to survive alone. So, for the sake of her children, she must venture into a world that is no longer a world she knows.

Like I said before, I liked parts of Bird Box it was not a bad story.   It was definitely a book that peaked my curiosity. I wanted to know what these creatures were. I wanted to know why they would drive a person mad. So, I went on this journey with Malorie. In the end, I was just as confused and angry as she was for most of it. Why? Because this story explains nothing. It is just what I said before it is a story about a woman facing fears. It is a story about a woman that can no longer live her cocoon of complacency. I don’t know if others will get the same metaphor I did out of this story. A metaphor about anxiety. It was like what I go through with my anxiety. There are people out there that might make fun of me if I leave my house. I don’t know what will happen to me if I leave my house. Still, sometimes I have to leave that cocoon of safety I have built. I must face a world of unknowns scared the whole time. I know Malorie stakes were much higher like she could die from wild animals or be driven mad from the creatures. But, fear is fear and it easy to stay safe then go out and face it.

I must say the beginning of Bird Box started out strong. I was addicted from page one. Then, it fell off in the middle and I was becoming slightly bored. Finally, by the time I finished the book I was feeling dissatisfied.  In the end, Bird Box was just a middle of road thriller. Not bad not great. I appreciated what I took away from the story. I didn’t feel like I wasted my time but, still, I wanted more than Bird Box delivered. I can still say I want to go see the movie.

Case in point: Vice Salvatore. Stunning. Growly. And also my boss.

Thank God his a**hole attitude put my racing heart at ease and changed my lust to hate.

Nope. I don’t care for him. Won’t. I’ll continue to ignore my ladybits and stay strong.

Dating was painful. My husband left us two years ago, and only recently, I’d gotten the courage to try dating again. Since the decision, I’d been on a few in the last couple of months, none of which had bloomed into something amazing. That was if something amazing still existed. I was convinced it wasn’t out there for me.

My latest failed example was a man named Ronald, an accountant who happened to be sitting across from me. When I arrived at the restaurant, he seemed nice. I thought for the barest of moments he could be the one willing to do the honors of removing my hymen. Because I was sure that sucker had grown over again.

Ronald certainly looked like he’d enjoy the task of re-breaking my hymen. I could tell by how his hand was in his pants shifting his erection around. At least, I thought it was an erection; it could also be a cucumber, and he wanted me to think he was huge.

I just wished he’d leave it alone.

Huh, and my friend Molly was worried about my table manners.

Although, did I really care that Ronald was a wanker—hee-hee—or he loved himself more than anything in life? No, at least, not then I didn’t. I also didn’t give two hoots Ronald had a huge wart on the side of his nose…. If only I could stop staring at it, then I really wouldn’t care.

“I’m sorry, Adalyn, I’ve been talking all about myself. Tell me, what is it you do for a living?” Ronald asked, shifting sideways in the booth to face me. What the heck? Did he just thrust his crotch up at me? At least his hand was out of his pants when he did it.

“Well, you see, I run my own jewelry store on eBay.”

He smiled. “That’s cute. Does it do well?”

Cute?

Seriously?

My items did extremely well, and they weren’t cute; they were wicked.

“Yes, they do. I’m gaining more customers each day.”

“Hmm. Is that all you do? Make crafty things?”

I had the urge to kick him in the teeth or knee him in the cucumber.

“No,” I gritted out. “Though, it will be once my business gets noticed more.”

“Right.” He smirked. The assmuncher.

Gone were the thoughts of him getting anywhere near my hoo-ha. The idiot could just shove his hand back down his pants and keep touching himself, because that was the only action he would be getting that night.

Still, the least I could do was get a meal out of him and maybe a nice conversation.

Okay, I was doomed.

“I also work part-time in an adult store.”

Of course, his eyes would light up at that.

He leaned in. “That’s very interesting. Do you get to try some products out, to, you know, let customers know what they’re like?” He smiled, and when he did, I saw a chunk of bread, from the breadsticks on the table, sitting in his teeth.

Internally groaning, I asked myself, What am I really doing here with him?

EXCERPT:

Tess pulls into the hospital driveway and stops near the glass doors to the ER. She leaves the car running and hops out. “I’ll be right back.”

Once I’m alone, the panic hits me full-force. Some of the shock of Reed pushing me has worn off, and now all I can think about is my knee.

What if I can’t play soccer anymore? Permanent damage could keep me off the field—and end my career before it begins. Every once in a while you hear about a situation like this on the news. A high school athlete blows out a knee or an elbow during senior year, and it’s game over. What else will I do if soccer isn’t an option?

Nothing. I’ll do nothing.

Going pro has been my dream for as long as I remember.  The folded acceptance letter is still tucked in my back pocket. I don’t have a plan B.

Tess returns with two nurses, and the three of them to help me out of the car and into a wheelchair. Inside, a nurse wheels me through a pair of double doors that lead to an examination area, where hospital beds are lined up along the walls and separated by privacy curtains. Once I’m settled in a hospital bed, Tess sits with me as the nurse takes down my personal information.

“Can you tell me where it hurts and describe the pain?” the nurse asks. “I’ve had some shooting pains, but there’s also a weird pulling feeling.

Is that bad?” I ask.

“I’m not a doctor, sweetheart. But don’t worry. This is an excellent hospital.” The nurse takes notes on a form attached to her clipboard. “How would you rate your pain, on a scale of one to ten? One being no pain and ten being unbearable pain.”

“If I don’t move my knee, it’s around a five. But if I bend it, the pain shoots up to an eight or nine.”

More like a ten.

I’m trying to be brave. A ten seems like a pain level of someone who survived a car crash, not a fall down the stairs. But if the nurse asked me to rate how scared I am right now, it’s a twelve.

“How did you hurt your knee?” the nurse asks.

If I say Reed pushed me intentionally, he might get arrested. If Tess weren’t in the picture, I would’ve called the police already.

But Mrs. Michaels can’t support herself and Tess on her own. She tried before and it didn’t go well. It seemed like every year they were moving into another crummy apartment. When Mrs. Michaels ran out of friends’ couches to crash on, Reed started working even more extra hours to help out.

“I fell down a flight of stairs,” I say.

“Did you hit your knee against anything?” She scribbles more notes on her clipboard.

“My kneecap hit the ground.”

“On the sidewalk,” Tess adds, wringing her hands.

The nurse finishes writing. “A doctor is going to come and take a look. Can I call someone for you?”

“I already talked to her mom,” Tess says. “She’s on her way.”

“I’ll be back to check on you in a few minutes.” The nurse pulls the privacy curtain around the bed, and Tess and I are alone again.

“Thanks for not saying anything,” she says.

“I know you don’t believe me, but I’m telling the truth.”

Tess presses the heels of her hands against her temples, like she’s fighting the worst headache of her life. “I don’t know what you want me to say. You’re my best friend. I want to believe you. But we’re talking about Reed. He’s my brother. He wouldn’t lie to me. And he loves you. He’d never hurt you.”

Until tonight I thought the same thing.

And now for my review!

I really like Kami Garcia’s stories. She has a way of writing real stories that you can relate to, even if you are in high school or have been out of high school for a while. Why? Because, whether you are in high school or not we have gone the rite of pay that is called being a teenager. “High school sucks. It’s universal truth.” Sometimes though it doesn’t have to suck all the time. I like Broken Beautiful Hearts because in this story I related to Peyton. Because, she went through something that changed the course of her life. It is something that can affect anybody no matter what your age is.
That

Life has dealt Peyton a physical and emotional blow. Peyton discovers her boyfriend is doing steroids. She confronts him and they get into a nasty argument. An argument so nasty it ends with boyfriend pushing her down the stairs. Her dreams of a soccer scholarship are up in the air because she injured her knee. She breaks up with boyfriend. Then nobody believes her so she starts losing friends. Things escalate even more when she starts getting threatening emails and phone calls. That is when her mom sends her stay with uncle and twin cousins. Peyton is at her lowest when she gets to Tennessee. Dating is last thing on her mind. But, there is something about the boy who sticks up for others and has sad eyes that Peyton cannot stay away from him. I don’t want to give away anymore than I have but you know stuff happens.

I like Broken Beautiful Hearts because it is an important story that deals with the important subject of domestic violence. And the topic about how easy it is get swayed into thinking your friend or family member could never hurt someone so the victim must be making a mistake in their accusation. It is important to take any claim of violence seriously. I was watching the ID channel recently and the cop on a show said something that stuck with me. He said he would not be surprised at the number and he guessed it was probably in the thousands of domestic abuse victims never report the incident to the police. Most of them think something like what happened to Peyton will happen to them. That nobody will believe them or listen to their story. I really liked in this book when Peyton found real friends because they believed her without a doubt. That enabled her to have a support system to help her pick up the pieces and carry on. I love the quote Peyton uses, ” But broken and battered can become broken and beautiful.” Peyton will never forget what she has gone through but in the end she found a strength she never knew she had to put the pieces of her broken heart back together.

I really liked Broken Beautiful Hearts because it is not just a love story. It is also mainly a story about survival. Not all survival stories are literal. Some stories, like this story are survival stories about mending broken pieces of ourselves. The struggle of learning to trust and love again. Sometimes that can be toughest battle of them all.

Every time Gwen closed her eyes, she saw him in her nightmares. Now her eyes are open, and he’s not going away.

Gwen Proctor won the battle to save her kids from her ex-husband, serial killer Melvin Royal, and his league of psychotic accomplices. But the war isn’t over. Not since Melvin broke out of prison. Not since she received a chilling text…

You’re not safe anywhere now.

Her refuge at Stillhouse Lake has become a trap. Gwen leaves her children in the protective custody of a fortified, well-armed neighbor. Now, with the help of Sam Cade, brother of one of Melvin’s victims, Gwen is going hunting. She’s learned how from one of the sickest killers alive.

But what she’s up against is beyond anything she feared—a sophisticated and savage mind game calculated to destroy her. As trust beyond her small circle of friends begins to vanish, Gwen has only fury and vengeance to believe in as she closes in on her prey. And sure as the night, one of them will die.

I really, really and I mean I really liked Stillhouse Lake. I liked it so much that I now have quite a few people in my office at work reading Stillhouse Lake right now. So, it should be no surprise, I was super excited to read the sequel Killman Creek. Killman Creek took off right where the Stillhouse Lake left off. Gwen is on the run and searching for her ex-husband now that he has escaped prison. With the help of Sam, Gwen decides to go after him. Of course, that is what you do when you don’t want to be on the run hiding from your serial killer crazed ex-husband.  Just like the first book Killman Creek is filled with creepy characters and thrilling escapes. I am definitely rounding up on this one because it did feel like more of a 3.5 read. Only because, it took me quite some time to really get into this book but once I did then I felt the same thrilling magic I felt for Stillhouse Lake.

stephen king ugh GIF

One of things that made Killman Creek really standout from the first book is that it is told in multiple points of view. I liked how the audiobook accommodated for all the points of view with different actors for the charter telling that part of the story. It really added that wow factor and made the story even more addicting. I definitely enjoyed how the actors brought the story to life.

In Stillhouse Lake the only character point of view is Gwen’s. In Killman Creek the story is told from her daughter’s POV, her son’ POV and Sam (her friend and brother to one of Melvin’s victim). It was nice to see how Melvin the husband, the father, and the monster was seen through other people’s eyes. The beginning of this book was a bit slow. There was a lot of searching and set up for the climatic show down at the end. I did feel that some of the beginning was bit filler. But, man oh man, when this book took off I couldn’t stop listening. Gwen and her gang of sidekicks are kickass usual. I don’t want to give more than that away because it better to not know anything more. Just know that if you liked Stillhouse Lake you will like Killman Creek. I am definitely invested in Gwen Proctor, family, and her sidekicks. I think there might be more in store for Gwen, or maybe that is just wishful thinking. These books have definitely become an auto read for me and I need more.

An outlaw motorcycle club sets up shop next door to Sea Haven in the dangerously sexy new series from #1 New York Times bestselling author Christine Feehan.

A brutal education in a Russian training facility for assassins has taught this group of men one thing:

It's a long road to redemption.

JUDGMENT ROAD

As the enforcer of the Torpedo Ink motorcycle club, Reaper lives for riding and fighting. He's a stone-cold killer who turns his wrath on those who deserve it. Feelings are a weakness he can't afford--until a gorgeous bartender gets under his skin...

Near Sea Haven, the small town of Caspar has given Anya Rafferty a new lease on life. And she's desperate to hold on to her job at the biker bar, even if the scariest member of the club seems to have it out for her. But Reaper's imposing presence and smoldering looks just ratchet up the heat.

Anya's touch is everything Reaper doesn't want--and it brands him to the bone. But when her secrets catch up to her, Reaper will have to choose between Anya and his club--his heart and his soul.

I went into Judgment Road super excited because it had two things I like: written by Christine Feehan and it was a motorcycle club romance. Unfortunately, I think in the end it Judgment Road was just an okay read.  I understand some of the themes of a MC romance are going to remain the same for all book like alpha males and slang lingo. I was hoping for something different and this just felt like a rinse and repeat of every other MC romance I have read. I liked the paranormal twist of Judgment Road. It wasn’t enough to really bring the wow factor to Judgment Road and I feel like that was what was missing to really make this a great story.

season 1 cindy GIF by Good Girls Revolt

I felt like Anya was a bit of a copy and paste of the same MC heroine I have read before. You know the heroine I am talking about, the woman who will do anything to fix her broken man.  The woman who smiles a lot and uses terms of endearments like honey or sweetie.  Plus, she is usually running from something so she needs the big strong man on the bike to save her. So, maybe it was just me, but I couldn’t connect to Anya. I felt like the romance was just okay. It was hot with a lot of super sexy fun times. Once or twice I found myself skipping over the sex scenes to get back to action. It was all stuff I have read before there again wasn’t anything wow or exciting.

okay GIF

Like, I mentioned before the big bad biker is actually broken emotionally.  The different part of this book I liked is that this alpha male isn’t afraid he needs help. I like that therapy is mentioned and used because you don’t see too many badass motorcycle club enforcers willing to at least try therapy to work their issues. I really enjoyed that Reaper loves Anya so much that he is willing to work through his issues. It wasn’t like some stories I have read where the heroine works some kind of sex magic and the hero is instantly cured. Anya has to work with Reaper to get him enough to let her touch him and sleep beside him at night.

The part of the story that really drew me in and kept me from DNF’ing this book was, the world Christine Feehan has created. I was really fascinated and drawn to all the members of the Torpedo Ink motorcycle club. I felt for them, and I mean tears in my eyes felt for them, because they have all had such a tragic past. The things some of them went through are things no one should have to endure. I especially liked that Torpedo Ink also has two fully patched women in their ranks. I am especially intrigued by the romance brewing between one the females and a member of another club. I honestly think I am more interested in the potential of this new romance than I was in the main romance in this first book.

All in all, Judgment Road was not a bad read. There were some good points: like the world, kickass female motorcycle club members, and an alpha male willing to try therapy. But, it also felt like it dragged in places. I felt like the romance was bit lackluster. I have seen this couple a million times already. But, I am now invested in this series because I fell into some major like with some of the other club members. I have to find out what is in store for my favorite Torpedo Ink members next.
