- Mira Grant

An alternate ending to the first novel in the Newsflesh trilogy, Feed.

Fed is the alternate ending for Mira Grant’s first Newflesh Novel, Feed. (Click to see Feed Review)

After reading Feed, I was a raw emotional mess. As my first foray into Mira Grant’s writing, I could not have been prepared for the way things ended, or the bravery of the author to follow through with such a drastic outcome. It was an ending stayed true to the characters, and what they believed in. It broke my heart, and yet it also gave me a tremendous appreciation for what I could expect from this author: unapologetic hard lines.

For that reason, I approached the possibility of an alternate ending with caution. Was it something she had written for fans who were unhappy with the first ending? I was worried that if it were a placating ‘they’re not dead after all!’, I might lose my respect for the author and the impact her writing had on me. Fortunately, my worries were unfounded. In fact, Fed only re-emphasizes that Mira Grant wont pull any punches, and she is not afraid to take you to the harshest realities. With this ending, she is expressing that what happened in Feed had to happen – and had it not happened in the moment that it did, it would have soon after. There was no way for this story to end where everyone would get out alive.

Yes, this alternate ending did not feel as appropriately canon as the ending chosen did, and I am pleased with the original ending because it allowed for the potential of the further Newflesh books, Deadline and Blackout. But what I did take from this alternate ending is that Mira Grant is the exact type of author I had concluded she was after Feed, and that has created a serious fan out of me.

With a BA and ongoing MA in History, I am avidly passionate and easily excited over anything written in a time period of my interest. My primary specialty is the Italian Renaissance, but I have extensive expertise in Tudor Britain, Louis XIV France, and am well versed in antiquity and general world history. Because of my deep love for the past, I am drawn to supernatural fiction, particularly when woven together with myth and historical background. I also love high-adrenaline reads, whether its horror, mystery, thriller or well written sex. Give me something to excite me.
