Stella Cross's heart is poisoned.

After years on the transplant waiting list, she's running out of hope that she'll ever see her eighteenth birthday. Then, miraculously, Stella receives the transplant she needs to survive.

Determined to embrace everything she came so close to losing, Stella throws herself into her new life. But her recovery is marred by strange side effects: Nightmares. Hallucinations. A recurring pain that flares every day at the exact same moment. Then Stella meets Levi Zin, the new boy on everyone's radar at her Seattle prep school. Stella has never felt more drawn to anyone in her life, and soon she and Levi are inseparable.

Stella is convinced that Levi is her soul mate. Why else would she literally ache for him when they are apart?

After all, the heart never lies...does it?

I liked the beginning of this book but I thought the end fell flat and just fizzled out. I liked the beginning, a story about a girl that gets a heart transplant and falls for the new guy at school because he makes the pain in her chest go away. Then there the creepy visions, mind boggling pain that only came at certain times of day, and the feeling that she is being followed. I thought this book was to be romantic and creepy. The tag line says “Stella’s heart is poisoned.” I am expecting some major creepiness like with ghosts or a friend that takes on a new identity for revenge. It was combination of both like the ghost was able to come back from dead and take on a full flesh and blood form. Then the ending was kind of rushed and I felt a little lame. I am giving Alive three stars because it wasn’t horrible just an okay book that gets a nod and a shrug.

Stella gets a second chance at life when her heart transplant goes through. She gets back to her old life but she just feels off. She starts seeing things. She gets a pain in chest at the same time every day. People she knows start dying. Then she meets the new kid at school, Levi. He makes her pain go away and her heart seems to know him. Then something happens with Levi and she soon discovers he is not the nice guy he pretends to be. Stella with the help of friend Henry, who also has a crush on Stella, they set out to find the truth about Levi and how he might be connected to donor of her heart.

Like I said, I liked the beginning it was definitely arm hair raising creepy. Like when Stella sees blood all over her body in the girl’s bathroom. Then she blinks only to discover it was all in her head. While Levi is sexy he is also all kind of a creeper so it wasn’t surprising when he snaps and tries to hurt Stella.  I liked nerdy Henry from the beginning so I was kind of routing for him anyways. It was the end that was kind of lame. They go on a podcast for a show that explains the unexplainable. The host says the only way to get rid of the ghost set on getting his heart back is to destroy the heart. I think the author tried too hard for a happy ending because Stella dies for like a minute and is brought back to life. In that time it was enough time to destroy the ghost because poof he is magically gone. All in all, Alive, wasn’t a bad read nor was it a long read. I didn’t feel like I wasted my time but I am not going to shout it’s praises from the rooftops.
