The fifth and final novel in Olivia Miles contemporary romance Briar Creek series!

The mistletoe is out, and the gloves are off . . .

‘Tis the worst season to be single, but Kara Hastings won’t let a little Christmas funk spoil the festive season. Sure, running her own bakery is a little harder than she expected, but she can handle it. And she’ll prove it to a certain infuriatingly handsome, bossy Big City guy. She may be sugar and spice, but she can kick his butt twice.

Nate Griffin is in Briar Creek only for the holidays, and he refuses to fall for the whole “small town, candy cane-scented Christmas Wonderland” thing. He’s more interested in the fresh-faced cookie chef who always knows exactly how to get under his skin. So when Nate challenges Kara in the town’s big holiday contest, it’s not just the competition that starts to heat up. If he’s not careful, Kara won’t just melt his icy resolve against a small-town Christmas . . . she’ll melt his heart too.

olivia-milesHaving grown up in New England, Olivia Miles attended McGill University in Montreal, Quebec before settling in Chicago where she lives with her husband, their daughter, and two ridiculously pampered pups.

When she is not chasing after her little ones, she is hard at work creating feisty heroines and alpha heroes with a heart. A city girl with a fondness for small-town charm, Olivia enjoys highlighting both ways of life in her stories.

Top 5 favorite holiday memories

  • First Christmas with my Dogs – They were both still puppies, and I was living in an apartment in the city that actually had a fireplace. I went out and bought them each a stocking and filled it with treats and toys specific to their very individual personalities and traits. My one dog had more fun shredding all the wrapping paper. My other dog refused to miss out on any of the excitement of the day, and by about six in the evening, we noticed that he was falling asleep standing up and almost falling over…
  • Baby’s First Christmas – It was so special to pick out a Christmas dress for my daughter and help her unwrap toys. Christmas became fun again, and from that day forward, I feel like I am reliving it with a child’s enthusiasm.
  • The first time we brought my daughter to see Santa – Now this was not the happy experience one might think. The very first time was at the mall, and she just stared at me with tears welling in her eyes and her lower lip jutted out and I felt so horrible, I pulled her off and didn’t buy the photo, which I’ve been kicking myself about ever since. A few weeks later, Santa made a visit to a playgroup we attended and let’s just say the tantrum she threw was photographed, and the look on Santa’s face almost trumps my daughter’s horror.
  • The Christmas I burned all the food – We ended up having to order pizza. There was still wine, and the dessert was saved, and better yet….less dishes! Merry Christmas to me!
  • The Christmas I had to call Santa – As an incentive to motivate my then toddler’s behavior, I fell back on that age old “Santa is watching.” I can’t remember what she did, but there was the time she acted up so badly (which shocks me, as she really was always such a good girl!) that I had to make a “phone call” to Santa. Well, my daughter went ballistic and I was barely able to keep it together as I said into the disconnected phone, “Hello Santa? This is Avery’s mommy…” Someday she will laugh about this. Or try it on her own kids!

[Manga Monday] Claymore Volume 1

[Manga Monday] Claymore Volume 1Silver-eyed Slayer Series: Claymore Volume #1
Published by VIZ Media on January 5, 2002
Genres: Fantasy, Horror, Manga
Pages: 187
Source: Library
A Claymore - a female warrior named for the sword she carries - travels from medieval village to village to destroy Yoma, monsters who disguise themselves as humans and who are almost impossible to kill. Claymores are half-humans, half-demons who willingly transformed themselves by mixing their blood with monster's blood. Claire, nicknamed silver-eyed killer, is such a powerful Claymore, she can slay a Yoma using only one hand. But she must constantly struggle to keep from becoming a monster herself.

Hey, look, it’s Fry. I’m technically back into the reviewing groove after taking some time off. I hope you’ve missed me, or, you know, at least noticed I was gone. I’m going to take over our Manga Monday feature for the time being from our lovely friend Carol, who had to leave blogging for the time being due to some personal reasons. I hope at some point she can come back!

With that, I am going to do things a little different than Carol did. She reviewed a whole series. I’m going to review a volume at a time, relishing in the journey. It might not always be manga, but it’s sure going to be a graphic novel of some sort. With that said, I’d like to start with a manga that’s been suggested to me several times over the course of being peripherally into Anime and Manga, Claymore.

I somehow knew next to nothing about this series going into it. Despite being one of the “classics”, it’s not one readily discussed or spoiled. I basically knew that there were some chicks in armor and they had big swords and sometimes those big swords went into enemies and those enemies were vanquished.

Honestly, the first volume of this doesn’t really add much to that assumption. I know that Claymores are paid by towns to come in and eradicate monsters that are killing the local peasants. The monster generally takes on the visage of someone in the town before going about it’s murder spree. Usually there’s a string of murders before the Claymore is even called in, and then there’s the whole issue of slow postal service and then travel time. So, usually the Claymore gets there before the entire town is wiped out, but not before plenty of people have lost their lives.

Claymores are half monster themselves. The first volume doesn’t super get into how they were made half monster. Were they born that way? Were they infused in some sort of horrific trial by fire and magical genetic modification? I don’t know yet. It points to the latter. The Claymore we are currently following, whom I’m going to assume is the main character, Claire, was recruited after a monster tore through her family. She finds a kid with a similar situation who follows along after her like a lost puppy and cooks dinner to be useful. He cries a lot and is mostly there to move the plot forward and be a hostage, at least so far. Maybe he’ll come into his own. Who knows.

Overall, not much actually happened. There were a lot of fights, plenty of gore. At one point Claire get’s punched through the gut and heals(?) the hole in her body. I don’t know if she healed it, it seemed like it was still pretty raw and her, I guess he’s a handler, warned her against getting hit there.

Before the close of the manga, we learn that in being half monster, that eventually the monster fully takes over the Claymore and the Claymore themselves will have to be eradicated. Generally, they choose someone with whom they trust and Claire is forced to kill what she coldly refers to as her best friend in all the world. This prompts far more tears from the kid than from Claire, who kind of nonchalantly murders the chick and then buries her.

I’ll have to totally read more, but in true manga fashion, it’s kind of a slow plod to the source and an actual overarching plot. I’ll have to deal with this monster of the week nonsense for a bit. That in and of itself is interesting enough for me to keep going.

Jodi Ellen Malpas is the New York Times and Sunday Times (UK) bestselling author of two romantic trilogies: This Man and One Night.  Now, Jodi Ellen Malpas is back with her long-awaited next novel—and her first stand-alone story—THE PROTECTOR (Forever; September 6, 2016; $15.99).

People think they have Camille Logan nailed: rich kid, daddy’s girl, beautiful, and spoiled.  But Camille knows that support from her ultra-wealthy and overbearing father comes with a price tag not worth paying for.  She wants a life without his strings.  Out on her own, she’s made a few mistakes, including one that found her clawing her way back after a stint in rehab and plenty of bad press.  Now, after fighting so hard to be independent and happy, she finds her life threatened as a result of her father’s questionable business dealings.  She has no choice but to play ball when he hires an ex-SAS sniper to protect her at all costs.

Jake Sharp resides in his own personal hell.  He had been distracted from duty once before and the consequences were devastating, both personally and professionally.  He vowed to never let that happen again.  Being the bodyguard to socialite model Camille is exactly the kind of low pressure job he needs.  But he quickly comes to discover that Camille isn’t what he expected.  She’s warm and emotionally generous, and she slowly succeeds in drawing him out of his tough exterior.  Jake’s past haunts him.  Camille’s presence settles him.  But he can’t have both.

Amber Tate believes the worst thing she’ll suffer in life is dealing with the unrequited love she feels for her brother’s best friend, Rylen Fite. She also believes war is something unfortunate that happens places far, far away from her rural Nevada town. She’s wrong on both counts.

When an unknown organization meticulously bombs major cities in the United States and across the globe, a trickle-down effect spreads to remaining towns at an alarming speed—everything from food and water sources to technology and communications are compromised. Without leadership, the nation is split between paralysis and panic, but Amber isn’t one to hide or watch helplessly. She’s determined to put her nursing skills to use, despite the danger, even if it means working alongside the man she can never have.

In this first installment of NY Times bestselling author, Wendy Higgins’s debut New Adult series, a frighteningly realistic apocalyptic America is brought to life, entwined with searing romantic tension that will leave you eager for more.

There is something truly terrifying about an apocalypse setting that scares and fascinates me at the same time.  I think Wendy Higgins did a good job of building a truly scary world in Unknown.  I finished this book in two days.  I only put it down to sleep.  Even when I put the book down I still kept think about how frightening this book actually was.

hoppip girl scared biting nails

Unknown starts out like any other contemporary love story.  A girl grows up with her brother and his best friend.  Then the brother’s best friend becomes her friend as well.  Of course, as he develops into a hottie she crushes on him and even falls in love with him.  This is where the similarities to a typical contemporary romance end.  Because, before the girl can tell him she loves him, terrorists strike the US.  Her brother and his friend join the military.  Years pass by with nothing else happening.  But, then something terrible happens and all the politicians in office are killed except one lone senator.  A new government agency rises up out the ashes to take control.  This agency has a new policy; everyone is an assumed terrorist until proven innocent.

That is when the questions start having to be asked.  What if Aliens had been on Earth all along studying humans?  What if they decided to use all the terrorist attacks to slowly take rights away until they controlled the world?   That is what makes this books so terrifying the what ifs.  How scary would it truly be to think that Aliens don’t need to come out of the sky and fight us on Independence Day?  They could just blend into the population.  They could just orchestrate attacks that would slowly create fear and panic until they were the ones in control.  The truly terrifying part of this whole story is that nobody even realizes it is happening until it is too late.

If you are looking for a good book that will keep you on the edge of your seat then read Unknown by Wendy Higgins.  This book is definitely a nail biting kind of read.  This book has horrific elements but it also has love.  With love there is hope and aren’t those two things worth fighting for.  I can’t wait to see what the future holds for the girl and the boy she loves in the next book!

Top 5 List: Top vacation destinations

Some of the most interesting places are the more obscure ones that people don’t usually think of going to.  You can really have an adventure there.

  1. Morocco- You have not shopped until you have visited the old Souqs of Marrakesh. We spent hours walking through the ancient, narrow, maze-like streets. You’ll find everything there, including snake charmers. But beware, it is very easy to get lost.
  2. Egypt- There is something really magical about Egypt. It’s like stepping into another world. On the way to the hotel, there was man riding a camel in the road. Downside….110 degreed Fahrenheit in the shade!
  3. Zanzibar (Tanzania)- A small, tropical island off Tanzania in Africa. The beaches are snow white and the sea is warm and transparent. There’s also a restaurant built on a rock in the middle of the sea. You have to take a boat to it, or swim there.
  4. Doha, Qatar- You have never seen over-the-top until you have been to the United Arab Emirates or Qatar. They make Las Vegas look like a tiny, flickering flame in the desert. Everything in Qatar is bigger, better, shinier and brighter. You could probably spend a whole week vacationing in their airport alone. (P.s. It’s hotter than Egypt, though)
  5. A South African Road trip- My husband and I once went on a road trip and visited the most remote, obscure and strange little towns we could find. We traveled about 3000 miles that trip and stayed in terrible, trashy motels, dodgy caravan parks and got lost a few times. It was awesome.

Bound to the Bounty Hunter (3) #DONE #3

Two older women plunked their butts down beside her. According to their conversation, they were leaving their menfolk behind to see Thunder From Down Under and live it up a little. They’d saved their bingo money and, apparently, Thunder From Down Under was in for a treat.

“Delores. Check out that honey walking toward us. I hope he’s in the show’s lineup.

There’ll be some five dollar bills in his Calvin Kleins.”

“Lordy be, Phyllis. That’s a fine-looking man. Now, if I were ten years younger.”

“Twenty, Delores.”

A barrage of cackles followed.

“Morning ladies.” A deep, throaty, and familiar voice replied.

Sophie’s heart missed a painful beat. “What are you doing here?”

“Going to have some fun in Vegas. There’s hours left on the clock.” Harlan trailed his knuckle down her cheek, leaving a trail of fire.

Her spine snapped straight. She stood, hands on her hips, her throat tight. “No you’re not.”

“Yeah. I. Am.” Harlan grinned down at a pissed off Sophie with flashing dark eyes, her kissable mouth in a thin line, color on her cheeks.

Her dark eyes narrowed. “No, you’re not.”

“Yeah, I am.” He sat beside her and pulled her close, her soft curves molding against him, then tucked her hair behind her ears. “I’m not leaving you unprotected.”

“Well, ain’t she the lucky one,” one of the older women sitting next to Sophie said. “If I was her, I’d be heading to Victoria’s Secret.”

Her companion elbowed her in the ribs. “Delores, I wouldn’t be packing any of Victoria’s Secrets.”

Harlan grinned at the older women then bent his head. “We could go shopping. I hope you brought that little black thong. Seeing you in your Pipe’s uniform, gotta say, I’m glad we’re hitting the City of Sin.” He ran his finger along her jaw. His voice still soft, he said, “Don’t wear underwear tomorrow.”

Her head snapped back, her face red. “I am so wearing underwear.”

He nuzzled her ear. “When I walk up behind you, I’ll flick up your short, short skirt and in one thrust be inside you.”

She shivered under his touch.

“I didn’t bring a skirt, so that isn’t happening, and I’ve got a spare set of underwear,” she said from the corner of her mouth.

No mention of the thong. He had plans of removing the thong with his teeth.

“Did you bring your uniform?” He kissed her collarbone, dragging his lips up her neck.

She stilled at his touch.

“Stop it. We’re in public,” she whispered, her head whipping left, then right, as if she’d been caught stealing from a collection plate. “And yes,” she said in a quiet voice, shooting him a look from under her lashes then looking away. Her bottom lip snagged between her teeth.

“Yes what?”

So caught up in the image of removing the thong from her body, he’d lost the thread of the conversation.

“Yes, I have my uniform.” The image of Sophie walking next to him in Vegas had his cock appreciating the picture.

Sophie in that skirt in Vegas.

He hadn’t thought this through.

Sophie walking around Vegas in sheer black stockings with her long legs on display and silver studs across her breasts spelling out “Pipe’s” would have more men wanting Sophie than he could handle.

He grabbed her hand, sat, and pulled her down beside him. “I’ve changed my mind. Don’t wear it.”

I love curling up and reading all books—no genre is off-topic. I like ironing, hate peas, love donkeys. I play a killer game of Scrabble, but usually lose. Hell hath no hunger like a man let out of a cage . . .

Shy and awkward, First Daughter Grace Reeves has always done what she’s told. Tired of taking orders, she escapes her security detail for a rare moment of peace. Except her worst nightmare comes to life when a ruthless gang of criminals abducts her. Her only choice is to place her trust in Reid Allister, an escaped convict whose piercing gaze awakens something deep inside her. Reid is nothing like her other captors.

He’s tougher, smarter…and one blistering look from him makes her hotter than any man ever has.

Reid spent years plotting escape and revenge . . .years without a woman in his bed. For this hardened felon, Grace Reeves isn’t just out of his league—she’s from another planet, but that doesn’t stop him from wanting her. Escaping Devil’s Rock was tough, but resisting this woman could be the end of him. For a man with nothing to lose, protecting her . . . claiming her as his own, becomes more necessary than his next breath.

I love Sophie Jordan and I will read anything she writes!!! I liked Hell Breaks Loose but sadly I didn’t love this book. It started out as something I thought I would absolutely love but it ended up just being okay.

music taylor swift whatever sigh shrug

The President’s daughter is kidnapped. Grace is being held by a bunch of low life goons. Reid has just escaped prison to kill the man who sent him there. Of course, I don’t really need to explain where the story is going from here. It is one of those the enemy of my enemy type stories. Reid has to make it look like he is down for roughing up and then killing Grace. Holding Grace captive is the only way to get his shot to get close to the man who ruined his life. Meanwhile, Grace and Reid find themselves growing very close. I will hand it to Sophie Jordan because she sure knows how to write some very steamy sexy fun times.
supernatural me gusta i like this please me castiel

Honestly, it was that chemistry between Grace and Reid that kept me reading. Those steamy scenes definitely had me needing to fan myself a couple of times. The rest of the story though felt rushed. I felt like things could have been stretched out just a little bit more. The showdown between Reid and the man who ruined his life was very wham bam thank yon mam. It all went down in the last little bit of book and was over before it even got started. Getting over that part, it was a nice story about rising above your past. I did end up liking Reid and Grace together as a couple. I felt that even though they didn’t meet under the most ideal situation that the life and death seriousness of it made it all the more real. They even part ways for a little bit to make sure what they feel is real. Instead of a story about Stockholm Syndrome. I have to agree with Grace on this, when you find a man that looks at you like you brought his soul back to life, gives you happy fun times that rock your world, and would die for you that is a man you hang on to.

What if the person you were falling for was a total mystery?

While Lily is spacing out in Chemistry one day, she picks up her pencil and scribbles a line from one of her favorite songs on the desk. The next day, someone else has written back to her on the desk! Soon enough Lily and the mystery student are exchanging notes, and lyrics, and even sharing secrets. When Lily finds out that her anonymous pen pal is a guy, she's flustered -- and kind of feels like she's falling for him. She and her best friend set out to unravel the identity of the letter writer -- but when the truth is revealed, the guy is the LAST person Lily could have ever imagined it to be. Now that Lily knows the truth, can she untangle her feelings and gather the courage to listen to her heart?

From beloved author Kasie West (The Distance Between Us) comes an utterly charming story about mixed messages, missed connections, and the magic of good old-fashioned secret admirer notes.

I don’t how Kasie West does it but she always manages to write these cute romances that leave my heart all a flutter. P.S. I Like You is no exception.

Meanwhile, Cade becomes Lily’s little brother’s baseball coach. He starts hanging around more. Lily starts to discover that maybe Cade isn’t so bad after all. Lily’s life that was full of routines takes a turn for the hectic as she to juggle: her new friend, her music, and her new and maybe not unwanted feelings.

I really liked P.S. I Like You. It was just the kind of predictable fluffy fun I was looking for. It is not a story that is going to change your life. It is a good story to escape the day away with.   It is not only romantic fun but it is also a story about taking chances. I liked the message I took away, that sometimes it is scary but one will never know if one doesn’t take a chance and go for it. Lily has to decide if she is going to take a chance on her dreams as well as an unexpected romance. I know for a fact living day to day routines and never stepping out of your comfort zone can become a crutch. Sometimes, you have to step out of those comfort zones and take that leap even though it can be terrifying. I recommend P.S. Like You to anyone looking for light romance about taking chances, especially if you are a Kasie West fan like I am.
