AmyAmy, 32- Dallas, TX

I’m Amy and I am the romance junkie fangirl

I am bookholic. I love to read books, buy books, and even smell books. When I am not reading or listening to books, then I am at home hanging out with my hub and my two furry companions. I work in accounting and while it is not particularly exciting, it does put a roof over my head. I am always on the lookout for a big blue box to take me and companions away.

I have loved reading since my grandpa took me to get my first “big kid” book and I fell in love with a pig and the spider determined to save him. That is when I discovered I have a fondness for happy endings. Then as I got older discovered I liked books with kissing. Combine kissing and happy endings together and my addiction to romance novels was born.

Rating System:

I personally, give books half star ratings and will round up.

5 Stars- I am blown away and this book is out of this world. I will shout this book’s praises from the rooftops. Fangirl hardcore over this book. Buy copies for unsuspecting friends, coworkers, and family members. Generally, push this book so hard you thought I worked for a pharmaceutical company.

4 Stars- I am floating away on a nice cloud of happiness because I really like this book. I will push the book and recommend but not as hard.

3 Stars-I think this book is decent stable read. I think it is neither awful or the best book since sliced bread. I won’t go out of my to recommend this book but I won’t discourage other readers from it either.

2 Stars-I think this book barely took off and is heading for a crash landing. So, I have to say I am “just not that into you” and this book and I will never be kindred spirits.

1 Star-This book didn’t even the leave ground. In my opinion this book will become a read at your own risk.

DNF-I could not even make it through this book probably because it bored me to tears.

 Profile

I’m Fry, and I’m the snarky one.

I’m hopelessly addicted to tea and British television. I have three kids, two girls and a by, am married to former wizard rocker and video game creator, and spend most of my time at my unpaid homemaker job, but have recently dabbled into transcribing (going on 1+ years, if you have need of my services, shoot me an email). I also knit, game, cosplay, and cross stitch. Hoping to get into dying my own yarn here soon.

I’ve been reading since I’ve figured out how. Some of my favorite genres are dystopian and epic or dark fantasy. I’m also quite the book jumper. Thank goodness for the e-reader, feeding my habit of multiple books without having to carry several with me.

Rating System

5 stars- This book is one of my favorites. I loved it. I’ll recommend it to anyone I have a chance to talk to. It blew me away and my review will probably be full of inarticulate praise and useless words like ‘awesome’ and ‘amazing’.

4 stars- Not quite perfect, but still really good. Some books in my 4 star category, while they may not have reached all my criteria to get up to a five star, are still some of my favorites. I recommend books out of this category, not as vigorously as my five star reviews, but just as fervently.

3 stars- Meh, I could take it or leave it. It didn’t jump out at me as spectacular, but I didn’t hate my time reading it. If it’s the first in the series, I will probably pick up the second, in order to see if the momentum can pick up. Sometimes recommended, especially if I know someone would enjoy the sort of book it is.

2 stars- Ugh. I got through the book and didn’t hate myself for it, but it wasn’t that great. Either it wasn’t for me, moved slow, or had a ton of angst and issues. It’s very rare for me to pick up anything in the series or by the author after this, unless the author or series has blown me away before. Never recommended.

1 star-  I hated this book. Nothing about it is redeeming. Would not recommend. Would probably spend much time talking people out of reading it.

DNF/0 stars- It was so slow or convoluted that I couldn’t bring myself to finish it. This happens very rarely. I usually push myself to finish books, regardless of how much they annoy me.  I think the only two books I’ve ever DNF’d are The Swarm by Frank Schätzing and A Beginner’s Guide to Rakes by Suzanne Enoch. It really takes a lot to make me stop reading something.

Bry, 24 – Vancouver, BC Canada

I’m Bry, and I’ll be your saucy guide in the realm of historical and supernatural fiction.

With a BA and ongoing MA in History, I am avidly passionate and easily excited over anything written in a time period of my interest. My primary specialty is the Italian Renaissance, but I have extensive expertise in Tudor Britain, Louis XIV France, and am well versed in antiquity and general world history. Because of my deep love for the past, I am drawn to supernatural fiction, particularly when woven together with myth and historical background. I also love high-adrenaline reads, whether its horror, mystery, thriller or well written sex. Give me something to excite me.

When not reading, I am a fitness model, sponsored athlete and personal trainer.

I am currently accepting review invitations, and welcome both print and e-copies with no real preference, though I have a tendency to complete e-books faster. I’m willing to give the indies and self-published authors a try, until I have a reason not to.

I am a feisty reader, and if given the opportunity, I will become emotionally invested in compelling characters. I develop strong opinions early on, but I am malleable and open to change – if you surprise me, I’ll be thrilled.

Note: As a result of my education, when it comes to historical fiction I can be a harsh critic, and have very little tolerance for authors who do not respect their history enough to do thorough research or don’t contain their biases.

Preferred Genres:
– History (favourite)
– Traditional Supernatural (favourite – NOT Paranormal Romance)
– Fantasy
– Mystery, Suspense and Horror
– Comedy

Genres I May Review:
– Erotica/BDSM
– Sci-Fi
– Non-Fiction and Biography

Genres I don’t review:
– Canadian History – don’t even ask.
– Romance/Harlequin
– Self Help
– Paranormal Romance – if it’s a supe just for sex, don’t bother!

Rating System:

5 Stars: I absolutely LOVED this book. I not only would buy this book and re-read it more than once, I have gushed about it to all my book-loving friends, and even badgered a good handful of those who couldn’t care less about reading.

4 Stars: This is a book I thoroughly enjoyed, and would come highly recommended. It may have had a flaw or two, most likely in writing style rather than plot flaws, but my enjoyment was barely hindered.

3 Stars: I liked it, but it was not an absolute win for me. It may or may not be a book I would buy, or recommend to others. A recommendation may come with a caveat. More likely to contain noticeable flaws in the writing style that distracted from the story, but did not disrupt or destroy it.

2 Stars: Meh. This book not only didn’t please me in writing style or construction, but it had plot flaws, or went off in a direction that was unnecessary, uncalled for, or just plain wrong. Not likely to end up on my shelves, and not likely to be recommended.

1 Star: I will be hard pressed to find something positive to say about a 1 star, other than it didn’t make me rage, and I might not have vitriolic hatred in my heart.  I probably didn’t throw it across the room, though.

0 Stars: KILL IT WITH FIRE. I hate this book so hard I am raging.

My name is Blue, and I am the apprentice Snarkologist, Lit nerd, and southern archetype.

I live in Texas, work all over the country, and usually have more books than clothes in my bag when I travel. There’s an English Lit degree gathering dust somewhere in my file-folders, so I might as well do something with those four years.

My favorite genres are alternate history, modern or high fantasy, and anything with a really good twist.

When I’m not reading (hey, it happens occasionally) I am on a rig, losing a test of wills with my dog, or shopping for more books.

I am accepting review invitations in either e-book or print, though print tends to win me over a little easier. Self-published and independent authors are welcome.

Please know that I do not mince words. I like what I like enthusiastically, but can be a little merciless if I feel a work is phoning in or derivative. Give me strong characters and strong plot, but world-building is where my heart lies.

Preferred Genres:
– Historical Fiction
– Alternative History
– Fantasy (High/Epic or Modern)
– SciFi
– Western/Adventure

Genres I May Review:
– General Non-Fiction
– Young Adult SciFi/Fantasy
– Steampunk/Cyberpunk

Genres I don’t review:
– Young Adult Fantasy Romance (If there’s a love-triangle or a vampire in the synopsis, keep walking)
– Bodice-Rippers
– Fairy-tale Re-imaginings.

Rating System:

I will only use full stars in most circumstances, unless the book is really on the fence for me

5 Stars: This one is going into the small pile I keep on hand at all times, just because I will want to re-read it again and again. I may have to buy multiple copies because the first will wear out from being read too often, and I could not recommend it enough.

4 Stars: This is a good book indeed. Maybe a little lacking in detail or with a few flaws in style or tone, but I would still definitely recommend to others.

3 Stars: Still good, but maybe not entirely to my taste. Flawed side characters, some minor plot holes, or a very derivative feel that make it weaker overall. Take this as a tacit recommendation, but with the understanding that there are problems.

2 Stars: Less enjoyable. Not terrible, but with plot holes, dead side plots, seriously flawed or superfluous side characters, or unbelievable main characters supported by a good side-cast. Your mileage may vary, but I find there to be better written books in the same vein.

1 Star: Nope. Found very little to enjoy with this one, and had to slog through it. Uninteresting characters, basic plot, nothing grabbing my interest. Would not recommend, and would not buy for myself or others.

0 Stars: Ragequit. Something in this book annoyed me so much I could not finish it. Go find a better way to spend your time.

Chris 35 – Dallas, TX

Profile:

I’m Chris and I’m an avid sci-fi junkie.

I’ve been a fan of sci-fi since as far back as I can remember. One of my first books was an old Buck Rogers adventure and I was hooked ever since. I’ll read almost anything sci-fi from the old style pulps to the epic series. If I can’t be reading, I will often be listening to audio books. I can even be found listening to a good book while doing my college homework.

I am also a huge fan of military fiction, historical, modern, and future.

Review Policies:

I am not accepting books for review at this time. Between a full time job, part time college, and things happening in real life, I just don’t have time to stick to a reading schedule. So I will provide reviews of books I have read when I can.

– Dystopian/Apocalyptic
– Fantasy
– Science Fiction

May Review:
– Steampunk

5 stars- I love this book and not only recommend it but will be reading it again in the near future.

4 stars- Not perfect, but still a good book. I will gladly recommend it and probably will read it again eventually.

3 stars- The book is average, nothing outstanding and nothing horrible. I’ll recommend it if you’re into that genre, but I probably won’t read it again anytime soon.

2 stars- There was something wrong. I was able to finish, but there were several problems that kept this book from being average. Not likely to read again or even recommend.

1 star-  This book is trash. Will not recommend it, even to my worst enemy.

DNF/0 stars- It was slow slow and/or boring that I couldn’t get anywhere. Will actually recommend people not even try to read this book.

Hello. I’m basically your typical fangirl, with a great love of books among her many passions. I’m working on two degrees (AS in Education, BA in English Literature). Basically- I read a LOT. You can come to me for some of the genres and writing forms that aren’t typically looked at- mangas and manwas specifically. I am quick to judge on a book. If it grips me from the beginning, I will read it to the end, and I will remain a faithful reader of the author (in most cases. There are exceptions). Usually if something I read (especially more visually based works) becomes an especial favorite, I will cosplay as a character from that series.
When I’m not reading or in school, I’m a Library Assistant, an amateur writer, fan-artist, and amateur Voice Actress.

Review Policies:
I am accepting books and titles for review, though I warn, my updating is sporadic. Aside from the ‘Manga Mondays’ which will be for every other Monday, I have too much time taken up by school to read books with as much voracity as I would like. That said, I am still open to suggestions, review submissions, and requests. I will never- EVER- review something that is in my ‘Will Not Review’ listing. Don’t ask.

Preferred Genres (can be Young Adult, New Adult, or Adult):
-Fantasy (High, Epic, Modern, etc)
-Sci-fi (Extended Universes from film and television fall here too)
-Manga/Manwa- Basically, Japanese, Chinese, or Korean graphic novels.

May Review:
-Romance (With exceptions: See below)
-Supernatural
-Mystery
-Thriller

Will Not Review:
-Horror (With few exceptions, these usually creep me out too much)
-Erotica (Not that in to the sex-scenes)
-Historic
-Biographies
-Parody Books (titles such as ‘Pride and Prejudice and Zombies’ will NEVER grace my shelves)

Rating System:

5 Stars: It’s so good I’m not only fangirling on it; I’m likely planning a cosplay for my next con. The story is well-written, the imagery is brilliant, and I cannot- CANNOT- wait for either a film/tv/anime adaptation of it. One of the best I’ve ever read!

4 Stars: This is pretty damn good! If it gets an adaptation, I’ll check it out. The author managed to hook me and get me in, but I’m not going to be a hard-core fan of it. It is definitely worth a read.

3 Stars: It’s good and entertaining, but I’m not excited or hyped. Some hiccups in pacing, storytelling, or continuity, but it’s still worth a look.

2 Stars: Not totally boring, but not ‘good’ either. I would pass unless there is a definite audience that would enjoy it.

1 Star: Complete crap, but I’m not going to flame it. Totally boring, forgettable, and the errors or other faults are too blaring. I wouldn’t recommend it to anyone.

0 Stars: THIS IS CRAP! So many errors, faults, and other hang-ups that there’s no way that anyone could read this and actually like it. It would be better used as toilet paper. It was a complete waste of my time that I’ll never get back. AVOID THIS AT ALL COSTS!

Rating System:

I will routinely rate books in quarter increments. I follow the rules of math when rounding up or down.

5 Stars – I loved this book and would recommend it to everyone whether I’ve met you or not.

4 Stars – I really liked this book. I’m likely to recommend it to most people.

3 Stars – I liked the book. There were some parts I could take or leave. I might recommend this to someone depending on their reading tastes.

2 Stars – The fine line between hating a book and having a mild dislike for it. I would be unlikely to recommend this to anyone and would actively steer people away from it.

1 Star – While I don’t condone book burning the thought crossed my mind while reading this. I strongly disliked this book and would recommend it to people I don’t like.

0 Stars – It’s a tragedy that a tree gave its life for this. Loathing is not a strong enough word to describe my feelings while reading this book. I’d recommend this to no one.

DNF – I didn’t necessarily hate the book, but for whatever reason I didn’t finish it. I’ll usually have a rating of the part I did read in addition to a DNF label.

Richard – 30 – Cary, NC

I’m Richard and I am the swoony one.

I’m a wizard hip-hopper, amateur physicist and theologian with a mild love of philosophy. I also bleed Tar Heel Blue and my Patronus is Sir Purr of the Carolina Panthers. I’ve been working in IT for the past 10 years, and when I’m not reading or consuming media, I can usually be found with my bow in my hand and arrows across my back.

I haven’t always loved reading. I didn’t start reading for pleasure until my senior year of high school when I saw the first Harry Potter movie, and a couple of months later, the first Lord of the Rings movie. Lord of the Rings ignited the flame inside of me and Harry Potter threw gas on the flame. And since those days, I’ve found tons of kindling.

– Comics/Graphic Novels

May Review:
– Mystery/Suspense/Horror
– ZOMBIES (Don’t really consider them to be horror)
– Romance

In truth, other than non-fiction, I don’t consider myself forgoing any genre. I’ll give anything a try, except perhaps for Brony fanfiction. Or just fanfiction. Or bronies.

Rating System:

5 Stars:  I love this book, and I have no plans to shut up about it ever.

4 Stars:  I really dug it, and will probably suggest it to my friends.

3 Stars:  Not really satisfying, and I may mention it once, or twice in conversation. When my species comes to rule this planet, this author, and the authors of the above star ratings, will be spared.

2 Stars:  It didn’t do it for me. There are minimal redeeming qualities about this book. I may donate it to children or to a prison, but only the prisons where they keep the really bad guys. I wouldn’t subject petty criminals to such torture. This author will not be spared when my species comes to rule this planet.

1 Star:  This book was terrible. The author who gets this rating will certainly not be spared, and they should probably find new work.

0 Stars:  This book was so bad, I couldn’t even finish. Author will not be spared, and may end up being dragon food. At the very least, an author who gets this rating will quickly find themselves atop the list of “never going to read again”.
